The End of the World - 2 Thessalonians
This book of the New Testament deals with prophetic events which will happen coincidental with the return of the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of this age.
This book was actually a letter written by the Apostle Paul to correct a misunderstanding that the church in Thessalonica had concerning the return of Jesus Christ. They were undergoing severe persecution and suffering for their faith. They wondered if they had missed Christ’s return and were in fact in the great period of tribulation spoken of by the prophets of old.
The practical result of this confusion was that some, thinking the end of the world was at hand, had stopped working, creating an embarrassing situation.
The letter details events that will occur just before Christ returns.
First, there will be a great turning away from the truths of the Bible – the great apostasy.
Second, an individual, who opposes the God of the Bible, will become prominent. He will exalt himself above God. He will demand absolute allegiance to himself. He will be empowered by Satan to perform great signs and wonders.
Third, the restraining influence, which is currently in the world, will be removed. The result of this is that the above individual will have free reign to work his evil deeds in the world. The people of the world will no longer have discernment and will believe the big lie.
The letter encourages believers in Christ, in all ages, to hold true to the foundational Biblical truths given to the early church - even in the face of great persecution.
